“Without a healthy environment we cannot end poverty or build prosperity. We all have a role to play in protecting our home: we can use less plastics, drive less, waste less food and teach each other to care.” – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres
World Environment Day is a day designated by the UN to provide people across the globe the opportunity to strengthen knowledge and conscientious conduct by individuals and businesses in caring for and improving the environment.
One of the many organizations take part in World Environment Day was TECOM, who teamed up with ride-hailing giant Uber to help business partners safely recycle their e-waste with #uberRECYCLE . TECOM and global waste management group Averda partnered with Uber to run the e-waste recycling program from July 2 nd to July 4th at seven business parks in Dubai. Through the program, Uber app users were encouraged to gather their unwanted electronics at any participating business park, then power up the Uber app and request “UberRECYCLE.” Uber then sent a driver to collect the items free of charge. All e-waste was then recycled by Averda
According to Averda, UAE consumers produce around 17.2 kilograms of e-waste per year, which added up to 600,000 tonnes in 2015 and according to the United Nation’s statistics, is expected to increase to 900,000 tonnes by 2020.
The “UberRECYCLE” initiative is in line with UAE’s 2021 Vision to create a cleaner and more sustainable Dubai by recycling at least 75 per cent of UAE’s waste. The initiative also contributes to the City Clean Environment activities outlined under the Smart Environment action plan in Smart Dubai’s City Transformation Agenda.
